1st MULTICULTURAL FAIR AT FUNDES: Celebrations around the world

The last 24th of May, the students of the Bachelor in English Programme hold the first Multicultural Fair at FUNDES, an afternoon full of activities, colors, fun and life at our beautiful Institution. For this first edition we, students as well as teachers, decided to present the most traditional celebrations of some English speaking countries, such as St Valentine " s Day, St Patrick " s Day, Easter and April " s Fool Day. 

Each semester of the programme was in charge of presenting and explaining one specific celebration. In this way, all the students were involved from the beginning and they had the chance to exploit their creativity and full potential as future English teachers by designing activities and games for the audience. Therefore, everybody would have a different experience and contact with this foreign language while having a journey to different countries, customs and even trying some traditional food of these dates. 

The final touch for this amazing and fun afternoon was in charge of the urban dance group Milciades Garabito and the musical group FundeSong, both formed entirely by students of all academic programme at FUNDES. The afternoon started with a bouncing presentation of urban rhythms inviting the public to enjoy the different stands and ended with an awesome performance of some pop songs in English, as well as some classic themes of rock in Spanish language that made the audience dance, sing and even jump on their places!

The success of this cultural event was due mainly to the commitment of the students, who despite their nervousness did a great job teaching the academic community about the story and history of these celebrations. Furthermore, they opened the door to new and diverse cultural spaces for everyone inside and outside FUNDES and most importantly, showing that learning a foreign language is far more than structures and words; it is learning about the world around us through this wonderful language.

1ª FERIA MULTICULTURAL EN FUNDES: " Celebraciones alrededor del mundo "

El pasado 24 de mayo los estudiantes del programa de Licenciatura en Inglés llevaron a cabo la primera Feria Multicultural en FUNDES, una tarde llena de actividades, colore, diversión y vida en nuestra bella institución. Para esta primera edición nosotros, estudiantes y profesores, decidimos presentar las celebraciones más tradicionales de algunos países anglo parlantes, tales como el Día de San Valentín, el Día de San Patricio, Pascua y Día de los Inocentes. 

Cada semestre del programa estuvo a cargo de presentar y explicar una celebración específica. De esta manera, todos los estudiantes estuvieron involucrados desde el inicio y tuvieron el chance de explotar su creatividad y potencial como futuros profesores de inglés a partir del diseño de actividades y juegos para el público asistente. Así, todo el mundo tuvo una experiencia y contacto diferentes con esta lengua extranjera mientras realizaron un viaje a diferentes países, costumbres e incluso degustando algunos platos tradicionales de estas fechas. 

El toque final para esta maravillosa y divertida tarde estuvo a cargo de los grupos de baile urbano Milciades Garabito y el grupo musical FundeSong, grupos formados enteramente por estudiantes de todos los programas académicos de FUNDES. La tarde inició con una movida presentación de ritmos urbanos que invitaba al público a disfrutar de los stands y terminó con una excelente interpretación de covers de algunas canciones del pop en inglés y algunos temas clásicos del rock en español logrando que tanto docentes y estudiantes asistentes bailaran, cantaran e incluso saltaran de sus lugares.

El éxito de este evento cultural se debió principalmente al compromiso de los estudiantes quienes, a pesar de los nervios, realizaron un muy buen trabajo enseñando historias y la historia de estas celebraciones a la comunidad académica. Es más, ellos han abierto la puerta a nuevos y diversos espacios culturales para todo el mundo dentro y fuera de FUNDES y lo que es más importante, mostraron que el aprendizaje de una lengua extranjera es mucho más que estructuras y palabras; se trata de aprender sobre el mundo que nos rodea a través de esta hermosa lengua.
